8 Lessons to a Neck Hang

When Molly walked into the studio 8 lessons ago, she told me she’d never done anything like aerial before. No dance background, no gymnastics, just a lot of curiosity and a willingness to try.

Like all my beginners, she started with the fundamentals – learning to sit, balance and move in the hoop safely. What stood out straight away was how well she listened to her body and how quickly she started to trust the hoop. That focus is everything in aerial.

Fast forward to her photoshoot and she absolutely stunned me. In these images you can see the journey: the long elegant lines of her mermaid, the strength in her inverted stag and straddle hang. Not everything went according to plan as my camera had some technical issues so I quickly had to swap (steal) my husband’s!

Mollys goal was to achieve a neck hang,  so we had 8 lessons to complete this! Our lessons focused on conditioning strength and practicing it each time. Molly learnt it fully spotted and with lots of breakdown and practice. We didn’t get a photo of this but Molly did get a video of it. I’m just so amazed by her achievement.

Eight lessons from first sit to this? That’s what consistency, good technique and a brave mindset can do. I’m so proud of you, Molly.

All advanced moves including neck hangs are taught 1-1 with a qualified instructor and only when a student is ready. Please never attempt without supervision.
